Geoff is the former Head of the UK Civil Aviation Authority’s Dangerous Goods Office. He is the current Chairman of IATA’s Lithium Battery Workshop and has previously been the Chairman of the ICAO Dangerous Goods Panel.
Ross is formerly the CAA’s Dangerous Goods Policy Specialist and has had nearly 25 years experience in Dangerous Goods enforcement.
Lithium Battery legislation is complex. This course explains the requirements and includes practical learning exercises.
Delegates will come away with greater awareness and the knowledge to find, and use, information in the Dangerous Goods Regulations so as to prepare correctly a consignment of lithium batteries for ALL MODES OF TRANSPORT.
The bulk of the course sessions cover the requirements in the more stringent AIR REGULATIONS (IATA DGR), after which there is a test. Candidates will be notified of their CAA Accreditation status a few days after completing the course and certificates will be issued to those who pass.
Following the test the focus turns to the primary differnces and additional requirements that are specified in ADR and the IMDG Code

· Incidents and accidents that may have involved lithium batteries;
· The basis of the requirements;
· UK legislation and enforcement. - Limitations:
· Hidden dangerous goods;
· Lithium battery provisions for passengers and crew;
· Dangerous goods in the mail;
· State and operator variations. - Classification:
· The 9 classes of dangerous goods;
· Classification criteria for lithium batteries;
· UN 38.3 tests. - Identification
· Selection of appropriate proper shipping names
· Special provisions - Packing
· Selection and use of various Packing Instructions
· Selection of appropriate sections of the Packing Instructions (i.e. I, IA, IB and II) - Marks and labelling
· Specifications and selection of appropriate marks, hazard warning labels and handling labels. - Documentation
· Completion of the Shipper’s declaration
· Completion of the applicable sections of the air waybill. - At this point there is a test to verify understanding, successful completion of which results in allocation of a UK Civil Aviation Authority student registration number.
